چکیده

Germ cell tumors comprise about 20% of all ovarian tumors and most of which are mature cystic teratomas. Monodermal teratomas are germ cell tumors derived from a single germ layer. A 33-year-old-woman revealed to the gynecology outpatient clinic with pelvic pain which is persisting for one month. The physical examination and ultrasounographic evaluation revealed a pelvic mass. Thus, laparotomy was performed. As a result of the frozen section analysis, the mass in the left ovary was diagnosed as malignant. The patient underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy and subsequent right ovarian wedge biopsy, appendectomy, total omentectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Dissection revealed a biloculated and partially cystic appearance. Microscopic examination indicated mature brain tissue in addition to neural tissues with perivascular pseudorosettes. According to the immunohistochemical and microscopic findings, the case was reported as ependymoma developed in a monodermal teratoma with neuroectodermal differentiation. Although mature cystic teratomas are the most common ovarian tumors ,malignant transformation is a rare complication occurring in approximately 2% of cases. The most common type of malignant transformation is to squamous cell carcinoma. Because of ependymoma development in ovarian monodermal teratoma is extremely rare in the literature, it should be considered in clinical and pathological examination.

Hand-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgery for a Mesenteric Teratoma

Mature cystic teratomas are benign neoplasms of germ cell tumors that occur most frequently in gonadal sites. The tumors usually contain 2 or 3 well-differentiated elements of endodermal, ectodermal, and mesodermal origin. Although relatively uncommon, teratomas can be composed of mature tissue originating from only 1 germ cell layer. This is known as a monodermal teratoma. Extragonadal teratom...

Hyperthyroidism with Struma

Struma ovarii or monodermal teratoma, is a specialized ovarian neoplasm composed entirely of mature thyroid tissue. It is a relatively rare tumor which comprises 1% of all ovarian tumors and 2.7% of all dermoid tumors. Its colour and consistency is like that of a thyroid tissue. The tissue may show any of the pathologic changes seen in a normally placed gland, including diffuse or nodular hyper...

We are reporting here a case of unilateral benign cystic SO in a 50-year-old postmenopausal lady presented with pain and heaviness in lower abdomen without any signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidis...

Ependymoma and Carcinoid Tumor Associated with Ovarian Mature Cystic Teratoma in a Patient with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia I

Ovarian teratomas rarely undergo new neoplastic transformation and account for a small percentage of malignant ovarian germ cell neoplasms. Here we report a case of a 51-year-old woman with multiple endocrine neoplasia type I (MEN I) who was found to have an ependymoma and neuroendocrine tumor (trabecular carcinoid) associated with mature cystic teratoma of her left ovary. The ependymoma compon...
